Culturally London

Culturally London

Quite a lot of people have striven to define “Englishness” and failed in fact English culture is really a mixed culture, having assimilated the best from many other cultures. Racially the English are Celts, Romans, Vikings, Saxons, Normans, with a handful of lesser traits thrown in for good measure.

The colonial past has made the city more cosmopolitan than any other. Class is still often more important than color, though its boundaries shift with the winds. The English have always admired foreigners, and have imported other cultures, languages and foods, giving them a unique turn.

Budget Tips to Get the Best Deal on your Rental Car

Budget Tips to Get the Best Deal on your Rental Car

Rental car can be a big vacation expense if you are traveling on budget. Getting the best deal on the transportation is very important to keeping your vacation fun while staying within budget.

One way to keep costs as low as possible is to choose the smallest, most economical car you and your family are comfortable with. Choosing a compact, subcompact or economy car makes sense on a number of levels. For one thing, such budget rental cars are generally less pricey to rent in the first place.

The other important consideration, however, is a gas mileage. You as the renter of the car will be responsible for keeping it gassed up, including topping off the tank before returning it. Buying a car that gets great mileage will definitely help your travel budget stretch farther.

If you need a bigger rental car or minivan, it is important to shop around for the best deal you can find. While it is important to shop around no matter what type of car you are considering, it is even more important when trying to budget rental cars for which there is a lot of demand, like convertibles, minivans or SUV’s or motorhomes.

Shopping around at a number of travel-related web sites, as well as at the web sites of the budget rental car companies themselves, is usually the finest way to grab the best deal.

1. Weekly budget rental cars

The length of the rental can have a huge impact on the cost as well. Weekly rentals are often far less costly than a comparable daily rate spread over a week. So if your vacation plans are for a week or more, be sure to inquire about special rates.

2. Joining Renter Club

Joining the frequent renter club or using the same rental car company each time is a great way to get some special coupons and some very good deals. In addition, most budget rental car companies associate with at least one airline to provide frequent flyer miles or other types of rewards when you rent a budget rental car.

In addition, many airlines run bonus programs where you get extra miles or extra credit. So be sure to inquire about these bonuses when making your reservation.

3. Insurance Coverage

Another great way to save money and keep your budget, while taking rental car, low is not to buy things you do not need. In most cases, this means waiving the optional collision insurance coverage offered by the rental car company.

Many budget rental car companies really push this insurance, but in most cases you are already covered and can securely decline it. For example, most automobile insurance policies already provide collision coverage for budget rental cars, so be sure to check with your car insurance company before starting to plan your vacation.

Even if your insurance company does not cover your rental car, chances are one of your credit card companies does. Many credit cards provide coverage for rental car paid for with the card, so be sure to check with your credit card company to see if they offer this coverage.

4. Going for Used Rental car

Another method to keep rental car costs to a minimum, and one that many people are unaware of, is renting a used budget rental car. There are a number of large national companies, and a number of smaller local companies as well, that rent used rental cars at a much lower price than comparable new cars. In most cases, these rental cars are only a few years old, and they provide the same protection, and the same transportation as more costly new budget rental cars.

Legal Tips When Traveling Overseas

Legal Tips When Traveling Overseas

The very first thing you have to remember is that you are a guest in a foreign country and you are subject to their rules and regulations. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. You need to do some homework and find out what the laws of the country you are visiting are so that you stay out of trouble and have an enjoyable vacation.

Obey Foreign Laws

When you are in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws. It helps to learn about local laws and regulations and to obey them. Try to avoid areas of unrest and disturbance. Deal only with authorised outlets when exchanging money or buying airline tickets and traveler’s checks. Do not deliver a package for anyone, unless you know the person well and you are certain that the package does not contain drugs or other contraband.

Before you think about selling personal effects, such as clothing, cameras, or jewellery, you should learn about the local regulations regarding such sales. You must adhere strictly to local laws because the penalties that you risk are severe.

Some countries are particularly sensitive about photographs. In general, refrain from photographing police and military installations and personnel; industrial structures, including harbor, rail, and airport facilities; border areas; and scenes of civil disorder or other public disturbance. Taking such photographs may result in your detention, in the confiscation of your camera and films, as well as the imposition of fines. For information on photography restrictions, check with the country’s tourist office or its embassy or consulate in the United States. Once abroad, you can check with local authorities or with the Consular Section of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Legal Aid

Because you are subject to local laws abroad, there is little that a U.S. consular officer can do for you, if you encounter legal difficulties. As stated previously, a consular officer cannot get you out of jail. What American officials can do is limited by both foreign and U.S. laws.

Although U.S. consular officers cannot serve as attorneys nor give legal advice, they can provide a list of local attorneys and help you find adequate legal representation. The lists of attorneys are carefully compiled from local bar association lists and responses to questionnaires, but neither the Department of State nor U.S. embassies nor consulates abroad can assume responsibility for the caliber, competence, or professional integrity of the attorneys.

If you are arrested, you should ask the authorities to notify a consular officer at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Under international agreements and practice, you have the right to talk to the U.S. consul. If you are denied this right, try to have someone get in touch with the U.S. consular officer for you.

When alerted, U.S. officials will visit you, advise you of your rights according to local laws, and contact your family and friends, if you wish. They will do whatever they can to protect your legitimate interests and to ensure that you are not discriminated against under local law. U.S. consuls can transfer money, food, and clothing to the prison authorities from your family or friends. They will try to get relief, if you are held under inhumane or unhealthy conditions or treated less favourably than others in the same situation.

Fun signposts from around the world

Fun signposts from around the world

It’s always fun to have a laugh. Usually at other peoples’ expense.

Being an English speaker and keen traveller though, there’s one thing you can enjoy when on a jaunt:  English signposts.  Or, hilariously written English signposts.

The hilarious thing is always:

a) they’ve paid big bucks for the sign, why not get the translation right too
b) why they never realise how hilariously wrong it is.

I think B usually exists because we (the purveyors of great humour) are too wicked not to tell them as we enjoy it so much and just send out tweets or FaceBook updates about it.

Different spellings are funny but semantic tangles are what dreams are made of.

Here are my favourites from around the net.

*warning* some of these will have you peeing your pants.

In a Belgrade hotel elevator:
Please leave your values at the front desk.

In a Japanese hotel:
You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid.

In the lobby of a Moscow hotel across from a Russian Monastery:
You are welcome to visit the cemetery where famous Russian and Soviet composers, artists, and writers are buried daily except Thursday.

In an Austrian hotel catering to skiers:
Not to perambulate the corridors in the hours of repose in the boots of ascension

In a Swiss mountain inn:
Special today: no ice cream.

On the menu of a Swiss restaurant:
Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.

On the menu of a Polish hotel:
Salad a firm’s own make; limpid red beet soup with cheesy dumplings in the form of a finger; roasted duck let loose; beef rashers beaten up in the country people’s fashion.

Alongside a Hong Kong tailor shop:
Ladies may have a fit upstairs.

Which is your favourite?

Tell me below. And, have you discovered any of your own on your travels?

A new blog direction for hotelpepper

A new blog direction for hotelpepper

There comes a time when a business or a blog decides to pivot for one reason or another. It doesn’t necessarily mean something isn’t working or a failure, but that energy may be best utilised pointing in another direction.

As hotelpepper.com is all about finding a good hotel room at a good place in a good location, the blog should also focus on ways to save money and cut costs on holiday and business travel.

There’s been a load of posts on the topic already and they seem really well received by this audience so it would be right to focus on more of the same.

There’ll still be posts in the other usual categories too (food, mini travel guides on cities etc) but budget travel tips and saving money (especially in this current economic *cough* situation) is a great contemporary focus.

If you’d like to suggest another focus or have anything else, please don’t hesitate to post below or get in touch.

Thanks for your time,

Michael

The Weather in Las Vegas

The Weather in Las Vegas

Contrary to what some people think, Las Vegas weather does have four seasons. Yes, the seasons are different than you would experience in a Northern state, but they exist nonetheless. Let’s take a look at what they are like.

Normal high temperatures in Las Vegas, in the middle of Winter, are around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Daily normal lows hover around 35. Lows have been recorded as low as 8 degrees. Temperatures into the 80s have been recorded in March as Winter was ending. Las Vegas hasn’t has a major snowstorm in years, but in January 1979 Las Vegas received 9.9 inches of snow, and in January 1949 Las Vegas was hit with 16.7 inches! January and February tend to be rainier than most months, but they still average well below an inch of rain.
